CFB Mailbag: Top NFLers, Upsets and Crabs

Your questions continue pouring in, so we will continue answering them. Don’t forget to share your questions here i f you would like to have them answered.

Question: How will Drue Tranqull’s ACL tear impact Louisville? –Jared

Combined with Jarron Jones’ injury, Tranquill’s ACL tear did help the Cards secure a win over Notre Dame, but I don’t doubt they would have found a way to beat the Irish with those two defensive studs.  Notre Dame lost to one of the Big10’s worse teams in Northwestern, and is simply not a very good football team.

Question: What coach needs to do good in this year’s recruiting class to keep his job? –Brandon

Coaches don’t keep their jobs based on recruiting.  Take a look a Brady Hoke, who has produced some top 10 recruiting classes, but will be gone after this year.  You have to develop that talent and win games.

Question: Will Melvin Gordon be the most complete back to head for the NFL draft since Trent Richardson? -Gus

Gordon is one heck of a rusher, with 2,109 yards on the ground, but I wouldn’t call him the most complete back.  Whether it’s his ability to catch or simply Wisconsin’s offense, he has only hauled in 147 yards receiving this year.  Richardson had 338 receiving yards his senior season – not a huge jump, but that number does more than double Gordon’s.

Question: Arizona or ASU? –Mac

I’ll go with Arizona State.  The Wildcats have a very bright future, but I’ll go with the experienced leadership of senior ASU quarterback Taylor Kelly over the very promising Arizona freshman signal-caller Anu Solomon.  The Sun Devils have won three of the last four meetings, and although I don’t believe that trend will change this year, it will in the near future.  Should be an entertaining matchup.

Question: Please PLEASE tell me there is hope for Florida upsetting FSU? -Someone who has crabs but dont steal crab legs

I hope you didn’t pay for yours’ either.  And here’s a tip: skip that burning, special shampoo, and just go bald.  Shave it clean and wash with hot water – you’ll be good to go.  That little comb will come in handy though.

The Gators absolutely have chance to upset FSU; hell, everyone does.  The Seminoles will be up for this one, but if they win, all hope isn’t lost.  Georgia Tech is a young team who is playing some really great football recently.  I would pick them to beat Florida State today.

Be on the lookout for the FSU to give up around 700 yards on the ground in the next two games.

Question: Bigger chance for upset – TX vs TCU or OSU vs UM? -Richard

Texas has a very good shot to knock off TCUCharlie Strong silently has the Longhorns playing some really good football right now.  Texas spanked West Virginia – a team TCU should have lost to without some last-minute heroics, and they handled Oklahoma State on the road just as well as Baylor did.  This game in Austin is going to be a good one, and I would not be surprised if Texas comes away with the first signature win of the Charlie Strong Era.

As for That Team Up North… not a chance!

Question: Bro give marshal some love damnit. -Pat

I love me some Marshall, because they almost always cover the spread.  And the College Football Playoff committee recently gave them some love as well.  They need to jump ahead of Boise State in the playoff rankings so they can play a New Year’s day bowl, and let the nation see them.

Question:Who are the three players most likely to make the best NFLers in college football now? -Ken

Amari Cooper – WR Alabama.

Leonard Williams – DL USC.

Todd Gurley – RB Georgia (his ACL injury does have me a bit worried).

Question: Can Frank Beamer just leave already? -[none]

Beamer ball will never die!… on the defensive side of the ball.  Frank may need to invest in a new offensive coordinator to extend his tenure at Virginia Tech.  Don’t get me wrong; his job isn’t in jeopardy just yet, but the Hokies will need to find a way to put points up (6-3 loss to Wake Forest in double OT?!), or the seat will get hot in the coming years.

Better recruiting wouldn’t hurt either, as VT is currently ranked 24th in the 247Sports Composite score for the 2015 class.
