Giants Get Testy with Local Reporter

Local San Francisco Giants‘ beat writer Andrew Baggarly reported Tuesday that a heated exchange took place between pitcher Sergio Romo and coach Shawon Dunston. Here is part of Baggarly’s report:

Multiple sources confirmed that right-hander Sergio Romo and coach Shawon Dunston exchanged heated words with raised voices, causing Bruce Bochy to emerge from his office to intervene. The air was cleared – as was the clubhouse – but Romo stretched with teammates a few minutes later and remained available to pitch in Monday night’s series opener, sources said.

Seems like valid reporting, no?

Apparently the players within the Giants’ clubhouse think otherwise as they have since decided that they are boycotting Baggarly, who has covered the team since 2004. During a postgame interview, Angel Pagan quickly ended the discussion with a group of reporters because Baggarly was in attendance.

Bay area reporter Steve Berman explained the situation:

Apparently the team has decided en masse that they won’t speak to any members of the media if Andrew Baggarly is present. Multiple sources have told me his report about an argument in the clubhouse between Sergio Romo and Shawon Dunston precipitated this “boycott.”

Talk about being a tad ridiculous. With the team limping into the playoffs (3-7 record in the last 10 games), it is obvious that tensions are running high. So instead of fixing their issues on the field, the team takes it out on someone outside of the organization. Also, not once has a single member of this organization claimed that Baggarly’s reporting was incorrect.

Baggarly took to twitter to share his response to the situation:

He also threw this little bit of information out there to show just how ridiculous the Giants’ players are being:

It will be interesting to see how manager Bruce Bochy handles this situation. Something obviously took place in the clubhouse, no one is denying that. However, the reaction from members of the Giants’ organization to take such action against a local reporter is unnecessary and uncalled for. Can Bochy bring his team together before they play the Pittsburgh Pirates for the NL wild card spot?
