PGA Tour Kickoff in Paradise

This week marks the official start of the 2015 PGA Tour season (not including the Fall Series). 34 of the 38 winners on last years tour schedule are featured in this tropical season opener in Maui. 10 of the top 25 ranked golfers are in the winners-only field with Bubba Watson and Jason Day leading that list.

This event marks a soft start to the season due to the recent change in the PGA Tour season with the addition on the Fall series starting the wrap-around season. However, most players have taken at least a month off from tournaments, which means there will be some rust to shake off in the new year.

Defending champion, Zach Johnson is also in the field and is among my top-5 favorites to win this week. Along with Zach are Bubba Watson, Jason Day, Russel Henley, and Matt Kuchar. Experience is key at Kapalua and all of these players have played here before.

Sitting at 7411 yards and a par 73, Kapalua can be pretty daunting if the conditions get dicey. There are quite a few elevation changes which make that yardage easier but if the wind picks up like it does every year, the course can be a beast. A player that can flight the ball lower under the wind will definitely be favored.

I’m picking Bubba Watson to get the job done this week given his length off the tee and his wide array of shots in his bag. He’s played well at Kapalua in the past and also been playing great the past few months.

Coverage starts on Friday in primetime and makes for some great viewing given the Hawaiian scenery is a nice escape from the brutal winter!
