Second Half Projections: NFC South

It is without a doubt the worst division in all of football, so the following predictions might not be as glamorous as elsewhere around the league. Still, it is a division that features exciting players such as Drew BreesJulio Jones, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan. Sure;y there can be some excitement to be found…right?

Let’s take a look at the teams of the NFC South.

Their defensive struggles have been well noted over the course of their first nine games. Unfortunately for the Saints, give of their seven remaining games come against teams that boast offenses capable of having field days against Rob Ryan‘s squad. Until they find a way to fix that defense, the struggle will continue in New Orleans.

Offensively, the emergence of Mark Ingram has been a welcoming addition to an offense that hasn’t been quite as dominant as we have been accustomed to seeing from them in the past. Advancing in the playoffs will be an uphill battle for the Saints, but reaching the postseason should be relatively obtainable thanks to a remarkably lackluster division.

Carolina Panthers (3-5-1)

Watching the Carolina Panthers struggle on defense has been surprising, to say the least. Combining their struggles with the uncertain weekly health of Cam Newton has led Ron Rivera‘s team to such a letdown so far this season. On offense, the yearly health struggles for DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart (not to mention Mike Tolbert) have put even more pressure on Newton to carry the entirety of the offense on his back.

All six remaining games for the Panthers are winnable – though that doesn’t mean they will come away with six victories. In order to make the playoffs, Newton and company will need to win those six or pray for a New Orleans meltdown (which, as we have seen, is entirely possible).

There have been many struggles for the Falcons through their first nine games but the remainder of their schedule is going to pose even more issues for Mike Smith‘s team. The Falcons will have three divisional games (two of them on the road) and will face four other teams with above .500 records.

Combining an inept defense with an inconsistent offense and the Falcons have the cards stack against them. For the second straight year, the Falcons will have a top 10 pick in the draft come next Spring. And assuming my predictions hold true, the Falcons will also likely be lead by a new coach as well.

Oh where to begin with this incredibly ugly first season for Lovie Smith. Neither Josh McCown nor Mike Glennon have been the answer at quarterback and Smith’s defense has been mediocre at best. To be fair, the emergence of Mike Evans alongside Vincent Jackson has given the Tampa Bay offense big time weapons on the outside. Now if they can just find somebody to throw the ball to them. Doug Martin (when healthy) has been another bright spot for the Bucs on offense giving Smith a few players to build his team around.
