Trouble in the AFC West

Usually the AFC West is a fight between the Denver Broncos and the San Diego Chargers, but that isn’t the case after Week 7 of the NFL Regular Season. The Broncos stand undefeated at 6-0, thanks to their defense. They play Green Bay, also 6-0, on Sunday Night. The Broncos will most likely lose to lack of offensive production of their quarterback and future Hall of Famer, Peyton Manning. He has a quarterback rating of 72.5 thanks to his minuscule 7 touchdowns while throwing 10 INT. His play is declining and it will eventually cause them to lose.

Second place in the AFC West is not the team that anyone would expect. The Oakland Raiders (3-3) just came off a blowout win against their division opponents, the Chargers, by a score of 37-29. Quarterback Derek Carr threw for three touchdowns and no interceptions while his counterpart, Phillip Rivers, threw for three touchdowns and two interceptions. The Raiders sit in second place ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chargers sit at the bottom of the division. There could be a possibility of seeing the Raiders in a playoff spot this season if they keep producing wins and if the Broncos lack of quality play catches up to them.

Out of the five undefeated teams left in the NFL, only three are serious contenders for the playoffs. The New England Patriots, the Green Bay Packers, and the Cincinnati Bengals are the teams that show actual dominance when they beat their opponents. The Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos win games in ugly ways. Both quarterbacks for these two teams are playing below average and it will catch up to them when they play real playoff contenders. The Atlanta Falcons will most likely take the NFC South. Denver will probably take the AFC West, but they will not win a game in the playoffs unless they change something on offense.

The league is different this year. Many of the underdog teams from last year are producing wins, and the top dog teams aren’t playing well. We will see how the season plays out, but it will be a tight contest in a lot of the divisions.
